How to avoid the Delaware Maryland state line toll on I-95

There are two tolls on the I-95 in Delaware. One is the Delaware Memorial Bridge connecting New Jersey and Delaware which is unavoidable. The other toll is the Delaware-Maryland state line toll which is easily avoidable. There is a quick and easy detour to avoid the Delaware-Maryland state line toll is $4. Below are southbound and northbound instructions with a highlighted map to help you avoid the unnecessary toll between Delaware to Maryland.
Southbound
If you are traveling on I-95 (JFK Memorial Highway or Delaware Turnpike) southbound to Maryland, you should exit I-95 when you see Route 896 (Exit 1). Take Exit 896 North which is South College Avenue towards the University of Delaware until you see Christina Parkway (University of DE will be to your right). Make a left onto Christina Parkway (west) and stay on for about 1.1 miles. You will come to a dead end which is Elkton Road. Make a left onto Elkton Road and you will see a sign for I-95. Stay on Elkton Road which will take you to I-95 southbound and you have saved yourself $4 in tolls for a 5 minute detour!
Northbound
If you are traveling on I-95 northbound from Maryland to Delware, get off on Exit #109 on I-95 (which is MD-279 Elkton Newark Road to MD-213). Take Elkton Road north/east to you see Christina Parkway, which is two major intersections or about 2 miles. Make a right onto Christina Parkway and look for College Avenue which is the first major intersection. At the stop light of College and Christina, make a right on to College Avenue and you will see signs for I-95 north and south. You have saved yourself another $4 on your return trip!

Just so you know, Christina Parkway was supposed to be a commuter road for local people – not a superhighway for toll dodgers! I am not happy to go into Maryland and pay $16.00 to go to Baltimore, but I do. In the 27 years I have lived in Delaware, truck drivers have always respected the multiple signs surrounding Christina Parkway, but since they put the $4 toll on the MD/DE line, they thumb their nose at the signs and drive down that road anyway. Sooner or later, local authorities are going to start ticketing and I will be a very happy person. The trucks and heavy traffic have literally destroyed that road!

Dodging tolls is perfectly legal (at least it is for cars, don’t know about special truck laws). There is no reason for me not to dodge the toll… if the people of Delaware don’t like it, tell your state legislators to lower the criminally high toll rate… $4 to drive 10 minutes… no other toll road in the US is that high.

This trick worked for me going northbound on I-95. It will add time to your trip so it might not be worth it for some.

With Maryland charging a doubled high toll at the Susquehanna River bridge (northbound only), DE charging $4 in both directions, and MD adding yet another tollway on 95 in the vicinity of the Baltimore beltway (695), I frequently skip all of these by using US 1 to the west. Yes, going all the way to the beltway from Philly does avoid all the high traffic problems (and tolls), but it does add about 45 minutes to the trip, but also gives plenty of locations to stop and get gas or eats.
1 isn’t all that bad. In PA, it is expressway from I-476 south around Media, then scattered lights/45-55mph to Kennet Square where you pick up the 1 expressway to the MD line. In MD, it’s a 2-lane country highway with light volume and very few lights. Several routes/crossovers to 95 exist after crossing the Susquehanna on the Conowingo Dam. Past Bel Air, 1 is a 4 or 5-lane major arterial all the way to 695. I don’t recall sitting in jams on that route. While there are lights, traffic moves.
I go this route whenever I’m leaving in the Philly rush for long drive south, e.g. DC or FL, especially on a Friday afternoon when I-76 and 476 will be parking lots. Leaving Lansdale PA via King of Prussia, I’ll take the US202 expressway down past West Chester, then right on 1 to go south. On northbound trips, this bypass has greater value as I avoid the heavy traffic backups on 95 going into the Susquehanna tolls, which often back up for miles across and past the 95 bridge.

The $8 Maryland toll is ridiculous. I generally use alternate routes, unless it adds a significant amount of time to my trip. Otherwise, I rationalize I’ll be spending that money anyway in the form of more fuel.
