SPG has finally followed Delta’s lead (see Captain G’s previous post) and posted last year’s rollover nights to this year (2010). As you can see that I am a super loyal SPG member. I have already re-qualified for Starwood Platinum for 2011.

Looks like SPG was kind enough to also roll over hotel stays from 2009 to 2010; in addition to just hotel nights. Rollover stays is a hidden benefit which was not originally advertised.

The iPhone has been out for a couple of years now and with it’s elegant touchscreen, GPS feature, amazing interface and 3G speed, I can’t rave enough about it. I have it next to my laptop as indispensable items for my travels. My goodness, how did us road warriors ever survive during flight delays? Long check in lines?

You may have seen lists of “Must Have iPhone applications” on many sites. However, I find them lacking in one true road warrior perspective. For us true road warriors, we all know that connectivity (and battery life) is king. What happens when you’re without connection 35,000 ft in the sky, for five long hours? Or in the middle of the lake on the ferry? Forget about it! And not to mentioned AT&T’s spottiness (in the US)?

Here are our top “offline” capable iPhone apps. But before we dive in, check out our rating criteria:

• Must work offline:  no duh, huh? But really, if it doesn’t work in airplane mode, forget about it!
• Must be free:  free is good. (check back for our paid apps ranking)
• Can’t look foolish:  Wii is fun. But you really want to bust out your wii moves in front of sleep deprive, uncaring, and impatient road warriors? Yeah, no good. Thus any app that attraction unwanted attention is out.
• Entertaining:  it’s got to keep your attention for at least a bus stop. What good does a flashing light do? (for you epilepsy inducers, that’s just disturbing…)

And without further ado:

1.  Stanza – OK, so you can download all sorts of books on the Kindle. But who the heck wants another bulk in the laptop bag? (think, thin is in!!) Plus why drop another three bills? Download Stanza! Stanza is the ebook for your iPhone. You can buy the latest best sellers, or better yet, download from over 50,000 free classic titles. I’ve downloaded all the books I ‘cliff noted’ in high school. Hey, better now than never!

2.  Sol Free – it’s was a toss up between Solitaire and Minesweeper. Remember passing the time on your old NT with these two games? Sol Free does this and more. I tip the scale to Sol Free because not only can you play Klondike Deal 3, there are also Klondike Deal 1, Baker’s Game, Demon, and Spiderette. This is sure to keep you numb for hours.

3.  iChess – if Solitaire is just too brain numbing, Chess can always spark that intellectual juice! It was also a toss up between Chess and Sudoku, but since Sudoku didn’t allow me to easily notate each square I kicked it down a notch. iChess is a nice chess game for you chess gamers. By no means am I ranked in any fiction or non fiction chess world, so I find that the level 3 (there are 5) quite challenging. Maybe some of you chessmasters might object to this app but for the normal folks, it was quite rewarding beating the computer at level 2 and moving myself to level 3. To date, I’ve still not won at level 3, but that should change with time…

4.  21 Pro – for you gamblers, this is your game! Not only does it feed the gambling need, it also helps you count cards with either the hi-lo or knockout strategy. The game is fast moving but it’s only you vs the computer. Still great for passing the time.

5.  Tap Tap Revenge – I debated putting this app here. It’s borderline foolish. Tap tap is akin to guitar hero on your phone. You tap to the music on a set of buttons like guitar hero. With headphones on and ‘easy’ tapping, I figured one can be discreet on this app. Just remember to download enough songs so you don’t run out during your offline play!

Now you’ve secured that vacation time, what do you look for when buying an international ticket? For us seasoned travelers, there are only two factors – airline and price. Since each of us have already aligned with a specific airline, our choices probably falls with our primary airline and all of its alliance partners. And of course, since this vacation (unless you’re  Madoff) is not exactly on an expense account, every dollar counts! So looking for the best combination of airline and price becomes a science and a work of art. Does this mean you should click on that “purchase now” button once you found cheapest flight operated by your airline/partners? Not just yet! Check out the following tips to make sure you have fully maximized your purchase!

1.  Co-share – As you price out your ticket, the airline that you see on your itinerary may not actually be the actual carrier. What does this mean? Typically, it’s a partner airline operating the route but using your favorite airline as the label!  Have you even see an UAL flight from LAX – PEK? A quick check on the UAL site says it’s UAL #4456. Look closer, you’ll see it’s actually not UAL, but an Air China operated flight. So what now? To me, this is more of a personal preference. Co-shared flights will still give you the full potential of earning miles and alliance benefits. But every airline (especially foreign) operates differently – age of aircraft, crew experience and expertise, service, cabin configuration, food options, movie options, just to name a few. So do your research and homework before jumping on that co-share flight!

2.  Earn miles – Yes, make sure to earn your miles for your trip!!! This may sound easy, buy a ticket and give the agency/airline your frequent flyer number and you’re set, right?  Not exactly! Depending on your class of ticket, there are actually tickets that do not earn miles. The adage you get what you pay for comes in play here. If it’s too good and too cheap to be true, you may want to double check the class of ticket with the airline. So before you buy that ticket, inquire or look for the class of the ticket (H, Y, K, W, etc).  It varies among airlines, but call them directly to ensure that your ticket class allows you to earn your miles!

3.  Upgradable – We all worked hard to earn our miles. The best redemption for miles? Upgrades! International upgrades to be exact!! Real business class seats, legroom, reclining seats, special meals, and most importantly, that curtain to keep out the riff raffs! Of course in order to enjoy these amenities you must be willing to part with your miles. Ironically, and this has happened to me on several occasions, the airline may not want to take your miles! Conspiracy? Miles dilution? Not exactly. It’s all due to the class of ticket. Just like earning miles above, there are several class of ticket that are not upgradable. So do your math and homework. Find out if your class of ticket is upgradeable and if not, which classes are. Upgradable tickets usually cost a little more, but it might be worth your while to redeem those miles.
