Lured back from United’s EQM offer, I made Premier in May and finally received the Premier membership kit last week.  As part of EQM, almost everyone will have at least Premier status by early August (when United will calculate and give everyone double or triple Elite Qualifying Miles for their flights between March and June). EQM definitely came with a cost thought.

Unlike other airlines that will honor your previous year’s status until the end of February of the following year, UAL will only honor your status from the previous year until the end of January. Since I have flown 25,000 miles in 2009 (without EQM), I am qualified to be a Premier for 2010. Typically United will let me maintain my Premier status until the end of February 2011. However times have changed as you can see from the picture below:

For the Star Alliance fliers, this change may have some impact on your status if you are flying international. I am not a huge fan of US Air but The Coach has informed me that US Air still honors status until the end of February. With double and triple Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) coming to an end next Monday, June 15, 2009, United has launched a Double Miles promotion (link to promotion) to try and keep its customers from going to another airline.  On surface, the double miles promotion seems like a sweet deal following the Double & Triple EQM offer. The double miles offer allows you to earn double miles on flights between June 15, 2009 to September 15, 2009, up to three round trips.

So what’s the catch?

If you read the fine prints in the Terms & Conditions, the double miles offer is only available for the following fares:

• United First (F, A, P)
• United Business classes (C, D, Z)
• United Economy (Y, B, M, H, Q)

This means you will need to travel on either First, Business or a Full Fare Economy ticket to earn double miles. This is a marketing ploy similar to Delta’s Triple MQM offer (see previous post). This is another “caveat emptor” offer (aka: scam).  It doesn’t hurt for you to register as you may have last minute travel plans which requires you to buy a full fare economy or business class ticket.

How much is 10,000 United miles worth to you?

Are you willing to sacrifice three stays toward status at your favorite hotels (Starwood, Marriott, Hilton, etc.)?   Are you willing to forgo your free weekend nights at Starwood or free golf club offers from Crowne Plaza?  Are you willing to experience a motel for business travel (ghetto it up!)?  If so, here’s a deal for you!

Wyndham Hotel is offering 10,000 United miles in exchange for three stays at three of their hotels.  You will need to register or enroll (link to registration page) for a Wyndham account. After you have enrolled/registered, you must choose to earn United miles for your Wyndham stays. To get the 10,000 United miles, you will need to complete THREE stays at THREE DIFFERENT Wyndham branded properties. This means you cannot have all three stays at a Wyndham. Below is a list of the Wyndham family of hotels for you to choose wisely:

You will have to complete your three stays at three different brands between May 15, 2009 to September 10, 2009.  Unlike the Crowne Plaza offer which doesn’t allow you to have Priority Club points for your free nights, Wyndham will allow you to earn normal United miles for the three stays.  You should see your 10,000 bonus United miles in November or early December (6 to 8 weeks after the end of the promotion).

Aside from the Wyndham (which I have stayed at 2 to 3 times), all of the hotels on the list are like motels at best. I am not sure if I would stay there for business – maybe Ramada (and that’s a stretch). I have stayed at a Knights Inn and Travelodge when I was traveling as a college intern but that was years and years ago.  You might get lucky with Hawthorn Suites.  I have driven by a few and they looked new, especially the one’s near the airports.
