Westin is offering 500 SPG points if you decline housekeeping
by Captain G on Jun.16, 2009, under Hotels
Westin is offering 500 SPG points in exchange for you to make your own bed (or reuse your towels). Another way to phrase it is: “500 SPG points in exchange for saving them costs in labor and laundry.” A third way to put it (as Starwood Corp. would like to tell its customers): “Help the earth and enjoy a gift from us!”
Instead of the 500 SPG points, you can choose to get a $5 gift card to be used at the Westin restaurant, lounge or gift shop. I was recently at a Westin in Pasadena, CA and the Westin in San Francisco, and saw the card with the following message upon arrival:
You tidy, we treat
You may choose to decline housekeeping service for the following day by hanging this card on your door before 2am. In return for going green, we will deliver a $5 gift card that you may use towards any Restaurant, Lounge, or Room Service purchase within the hotel. If you prefer, you may exchange unused gift card at the front desk for 500 SPG points.
The catch here is you will need to put the tag out by the door before 2AM. I guess the Westin staff need to determine which room will not be serviced the following day and issue your card on time. You will not qualify for this offer if you are only staying for one night.
More Reasons to Take Advantage of Starwood’s Free Weekend Nights Promotion
by statusmonger on May.12, 2009, under Airlines, Hotels
As Captain G mentioned in his earlier post Starwood currently has a stay 2 stays get 1 weekend night promotion. There are more reasons to take advantage of this promotion as Starwood is also offering 1000 Delta miles or 1000 Northwest miles with each stay. The only catch here is that not all Starwood properties are participating in the 1000 Delta/Northwest miles promotion. Here is a list of the participating Starwood properties.
Also, regarding the Priority Club free weekend nights promotion that I touched upon in my previous post, I recently read the fine print and realized the free weekend nights are in lieu of Priority Club points. This essentially means you will not be receiving Priority Club points during this promotion period. More reasons to stay at Starwood instead.
Westin’s minibar and snack sensors cause inconvenience
by Captain G on Apr.06, 2009, under Hotels
The Westin snack and minibar sensors are way too sensitive. I was recently at Westin and accidentally knocked over a can of peanuts on the snack tray. I picked up and placed the peanuts back on the tray but apparently did not do it fast enough. The next day I noticed charges for peanuts and cookies on my hotel bill – apparently I also knocked the cookies off its place on the sensored tray.
I had to talk to the front desk to straighten out my bill before I left the hotel. Due to the long line, I wasted 15 minutes of my valuable time – luckily I didn’t have an urgent meeting or catch a flight. The front desk agent was very nice and removed the charges without question. However, this inconvenience gave me the feeling of Westin trying to tack on extra charges to my bill. Had I not reviewed the bill before leaving the hotel, I would have been charged $20 for the peanuts and cookies.
Westin could have prevented this inconvenience had they done the following:
1. Had the front desk warn me about the minibar and snack sensors. The front desk should have to told me I had x seconds to put the snack or drink back or I will be charged for removing the item off its place. What if I only want to see the packaging or read the ingredients?
2. Have a very large sign on top of the snacks and on the minibar door clearly stating that their is a sensor tied to the drinks and snacks. The tray holding the snacks had a sign on the edge of the tray which was way below eye level. The sign on the door was so small I couldn’t even read it with a magnified glass.
